Fuel barge runs aground in Elliott Bay; no oil leaks found

It must be the winter holiday season – we dodged another bullet, but there have been way too many barges losing their tows for us to ignore this problem any longer.

The Coast Guard said a 271-foot, double-hulled barge carrying more than 280,000 gallons of heavy bunker fuel broke a tow line and ran aground Tuesday night on rocks just north of downtown Seattle.

Petty Officer Shawn Eggert said two tugs helped move the barge, the Shauna K, to nearby Pier 91 near the Magnolia Bridge, where inspections showed no apparent damage or leaks.

Eggert said the barge was under tow when strong winds broke one of its tow lines, blowing it into the Elliott Bay Marina breakwall and grounding it on the rocks.
